<Back Slow is Fast By Derrick A. Tan / August 4, 2026 One lesson I have learned over the years is that sometimes, slow is fast. There were times when I wanted the company to grow faster. We had opportunities in front of us, new ideas we wanted to pursue, and targets we wanted to reach. Naturally, the instinct was to move quickly. But I also learned that growing fast does not always mean moving forward. Sometimes, when we pushed ahead before the organization was ready, we ended up spending more time fixing problems later. What looked like speed at first eventually slowed us down. Over time, I realized that some things simply cannot be rushed. Culture is one of them. I used to think that defining our values was enough. But culture is not created by putting values on paper. It develops through years of decisions, behaviors, and examples set by the leaders themselves. People observe what we tolerate, what we reward, and how we respond when things go wrong. Eventually, these become part of how the organization thinks and behaves. Systems take time as well. As the company grew, I learned that systems are much more than software. Policies have to be written. Procedures have to be clear. KPIs have to be defined. Risks have to be understood. Many of these things can feel like they are slowing the business down. But without them, growth eventually becomes harder to manage. And perhaps the most important part is building people. Finding people is one thing. Developing people who understand the company, share its values, and can eventually make good decisions without you is another. That takes patience, trust, and time. Looking back, I have come to appreciate that periods of slower growth were not necessarily wasted years. Some of them were the years when we were building the foundation for what could come next. There will always be pressure to grow faster. But I have learned that there are times when slowing down to build the culture, the systems, and the people is actually the faster path in the long run. <Back Building Our Own Great Cities By Derrick Tan / October 14, 2026 My reflections from the Buildrite S.T.R.O.N.G. Builders Summit 2026. Whenever we travel abroad, we often find ourselves admiring the cities we visit—their beauty, their systems, their architecture, and their impressive infrastructure. For those of us in the construction industry, we tend to look a little deeper. Architects admire the designs. Engineers study the structures. Contractors observe how things were built. In my case, as a construction chemical manufacturer, I find myself examining the materials and the chemistry behind them. We ask ourselves: How was this built? What materials were used? What technology made this possible? We admire cities like Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo, and many others. And sometimes, we wish the Philippines could become like them. But I have come to realize something. We will never become another Singapore or Shanghai. And we don't have to. Every great city has its own history, culture, identity, and story. So does the Philippines. What we need is to build our own great cities—cities that reflect who we are as Filipinos, our creativity, our ingenuity, and our aspirations as a nation. I have seen firsthand that Filipino-developed construction technologies can compete with international brands. In some applications, I believe our technologies can even perform better. But no single company, profession, or industry can accomplish this alone. It will take visionary architects, innovative engineers, skilled contractors and tradesmen, creative artists and interior designers, chemists, material scientists, manufacturers, and all the stakeholders of our construction industry working together. But before we can build great cities and iconic infrastructure, we must first strengthen our foundations. And this brings me to something very close to our hearts at Buildrite—education. We believe that before we can build extraordinary structures, we must first master the ordinary things. Proper tiling. Effective waterproofing. Durable coatings. Reliable concrete repairs. Correct construction methods. These may seem like simple and basic applications. But they are the very foundations of quality construction. We cannot expect to build extraordinary structures if we cannot consistently get the supposedly simple things right. That is why education is so important. Knowledge and technology must flow from science and research to our professionals, from professionals to contractors, and ultimately to the skilled applicators who bring these technologies to life. This is why we established Buildrite Academy—to help bridge the gap between material science, engineering knowledge, and actual construction practices. And this is also why we organized the Buildrite S.T.R.O.N.G. Builders Summit 2026. S.T.R.O.N.G. stands for Strengthening the Roots of the New Generation. We brought together professionals, industry leaders, manufacturers, and builders to exchange ideas, share knowledge, challenge conventional practices, and explore the technologies that can shape the future of Philippine construction. Our purpose goes beyond providing construction chemicals or introducing new technologies. We want to transform how the Philippines builds. And perhaps, one day, when we have built our own great cities, iconic structures, and world-class infrastructure, visitors from other countries will come to the Philippines and admire what we have accomplished. <Back The Small Choices That Build a Nation By Derrick A. Tan / August 10, 2026 Many years ago, I visited one of our suppliers in Japan. One afternoon, we had lunch at their company canteen. While eating, I noticed that a few men simply left their trays and plates on the table after they finished. Without thinking much about it, I did the same. My friend and supplier, Hitoshi, noticed and called my attention to return my tray to the proper place. I was embarrassed and tried to explain that I had simply followed what I saw others doing. But he reminded me that what others choose to do should not determine how we conduct ourselves. He then pointed out something I had not even considered: the next person who would use the table. By returning my tray, I was not simply cleaning up after myself; I was being considerate of the person who would come after me. That simple moment stayed with me: being mindful of others, even in the smallest things we do. Later, when we went to his home, he gathered some garbage and told me we needed to wait another fifteen minutes before leaving because the garbage truck would be arriving soon. I wondered why he could not simply leave the bags outside for the collectors to pick up. Again, it came back to the same principle. Leaving garbage outside unnecessarily would be inconsiderate to his neighbors. For him, it was not about a rule. It was about being mindful of the people around him. As I spent more time in Japan, I began noticing this mindfulness in many ordinary things. On the subway, people avoided making unnecessary noise. When they were sick, they wore masks partly out of consideration for others. Drivers respected pedestrians and traffic rules. Roads and sidewalks were carefully maintained so people could move safely and comfortably. None of these things seemed extraordinary on their own. But perhaps that was the point. A society is shaped by millions of small choices people make every day. Over the years, this changed the way I think about what makes a country great. We often look at developed countries and see their skyscrapers, highways, trains, airports, technology, and strong economies. But I have come to believe that these are not simply what make a country developed. They are also the result of something deeper—the collective values and everyday choices of its people. As Filipinos, these values are not unfamiliar to us. We have pakikipagkapwa, malasakit, and even hiya in its better sense. Yet I sometimes wonder whether we practice them enough in the ordinary things we do—how we leave a place for the next person, how much inconvenience we create for our neighbors, or whether we think of others before ourselves. These may seem like small choices. But when made by millions of people every day, they can shape a society and, ultimately, build a nation. Perhaps world-class infrastructure begins with something much deeper: World-class values.
