Buildrite Smartbond C2S1

Project Reference

Religious structures like the San Lorenzo Ruiz Church require materials that offer both longevity and structural safety. During the tiling of the church altars, Engr. Reyvin Legaspi conducted an unintentional "side-by-side" comparison between Buildrite Smartbond C2S1 and a popular competitor brand for the installation of 60x60

The results became clear just nine months later. The sections installed with the competitor brand began to exhibit "kapak" (hollow sounds) and eventual debonding. In contrast, the areas where the Buildrite solution was used remained perfectly intact. Engr. Legaspi immediately reached out to Buildrite to acquire more bags of Buildrite Smartbond C2S1 to rectify the failure and reinstall the debonded sections permanently.

The Science Behind the Success: Understanding C2S1 Standards

The primary reason for the failure of the "popular" brand was likely a lack of flexibility and bond strength required for large-format tiles. Buildrite Smartbond C2S1 is engineered to meet the stringent BS EN 12004 standards:
• C2 (Improved Cementitious): Indicates a high bond strength of at least 1.0 n/mm2 after various conditions.
• S1 (Deformable): Indicates the adhesive is flexible enough to withstand structural movements and thermal expansion without cracking or debonding.

Why Buildrite Smartbond C2S1 was the Superior Choice:
• Lightweight Technology: It provides 10% more coverage than conventional adhesives. This not only reduces transport costs but also minimizes the dead load added to the church's structural elements.
• Excellent Slip Resistance: Essential for vertical altar installations, ensuring large tiles stay in place during the curing process without sagging.
• Structural Movement Compatibility: The high flexibility (S1 rating) allows the adhesive to act as a buffer between the tile and the substrate, absorbing vibrations and shifts in the building's structure.
• International Compliance: It conforms to both European Standards and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ensuring world-class reliability for high-traffic public spaces.

By switching entirely to a high-standard adhesive, the church’s altar was restored to its intended elegance, providing a durable and "kapak-free" finish that will serve the community for years to come.
