Life's Perfect Timeline

By Derrick A. Tan / August 6, 2026

One of the realizations that has come with age is that there seems to be a season in life when everything feels almost perfect.

Your children are still young—perhaps toddlers. You are a new parent, learning as you go, discovering both the joys and challenges of raising a family. You and your spouse are building your dreams together. Maybe you're building your first home, traveling whenever you can, and creating memories that you assume will always be there.

At the same time, your parents are still healthy and active. Sunday lunches at their house are almost a tradition. Family trips are easy to plan. Conversations around the table are filled with laughter, stories, and wisdom. Looking back, I realize that this was a rare gift—a season when time seemed to be on everyone's side.

But life has a way of moving quietly.

Our parents grow older. Hospital visits become more frequent than family outings. They can no longer eat the food they once enjoyed. Some trips are no longer possible because of their health. The moments together become fewer, and somehow more precious.

Then our children grow up too.

The little ones who once needed us for every decision slowly become young adults who begin making decisions of their own. As a father, I have learned that one of the hardest transitions is accepting that my role is changing. I used to make decisions for them. Today, I can only offer advice and pray that they make wise choices.

The "perfect" season slowly fades.

Yet I have also discovered something equally beautiful.

Every season has its own joy if we are willing to embrace it.

With our children, the joy is no longer in carrying them, but in mentoring them. In watching them become independent, develop their own character, and celebrate achievements that are truly theirs.

With our parents, I have learned to treasure quieter moments. I enjoy simply sitting with them, listening to stories I have heard many times before. Their strength may not be what it once was, but their presence has become even more valuable. Time has taught me that these ordinary conversations are gifts that will not last forever.

Life was never meant to stay the same. God designed every season with its own purpose.

The only constant through every stage is Jesus. He gives us the wisdom to understand change, the patience to accept it, and the love to treasure the people He has entrusted to us for however long we have them.

Perhaps the perfect season was never a particular moment in our lives.

Perhaps the only perfect time is a life lived with Jesus—because when Christ is at the center, He gives every season, and every moment, a purpose worth cherishing.
